From Mrs. Potts to Mr. Popper: Angela Lansbury Retrospective

Enter to win your very own DVD copy, debuting on Dec.6

Angela Lansbury stars in Mr. Popper’s Penguins as Mrs. Van Gundy, and it’s her first film role since the 2005 kids’ flick Nanny McPhee. Though a critically acclaimed and much beloved actress in her own right (starring in classics like Gaslight and “Murder She Wrote”), Lansbury has put a stamp on children’s film with iconic parts in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Beauty and the Beast and Anastasia. Here, we will take a look back at five of these roles that families most know and love Ms. Lansbury for.

Jim Carrey (A Christmas Carol) stars in MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS, available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download Dec. 6.  The whole family will be full of laughs watching Mr. Popper, a driven businessman, inherit six adorable and mischievous penguins. As Mr. Popper quickly gets attached to his winged roommates, his life quickly unravels: the deal he’s long been working on with a formidable socialite, Mrs. Van Gundy (Angela Lansbury), is derailed and Popper almost lands in jail.  While Popper’s penguins turn his swank New York apartment into a snowy winter wonderland - they teach him valuable lessons about family- human and otherwise!

1)    The Dowager Empress Marie in Anastasia

As the Dowager Empress Marie in 1997’s Anastasia, Angela Lansbury lent her voice to this animated adaptation of the real-life Russian Empress. In the film, Marie spends ten years searching for her missing granddaughter, Anastasia (voiced by Meg Ryan), and is reluctant to meet any more women proclaiming to be Anastasia because so many people have tried to con her. Marie originally distrusts the real Anastasia when they meet, but as Anastasia recalls a lullaby they had bonded over – the film’s most memorable song, “Once Upon a December” – Marie realizes that she has found her long lost granddaughter.

2)    Mrs. Van Gundy in Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Angela Lansbury stars alongside Jim Carrey in Mr. Popper’s Penguins as Mrs. Van Gundy, a difficult business associate of Popper’s. Lansbury’s character owns the Tavern on the Green restaurant, where Popper and his father used to eat, and Popper wants to buy it from her to tear it down and turn the property into a new development. However, Mrs. Van Gundy only wants to sell the property to a person of true value. Over the course of the film, Popper proves himself to Mrs. Van Gundy, and she sells him the restaurant, which he then decides to renovate and reopen.

3)    Aunt Adelaide in Nanny McPhee

Lansbury takes a mean turn in Nanny McPhee as Aunt Adelaide, the controlling Aunt that financially supports the Brown family. Along with giving the family money and maintaining their lifestyle after their mother (her niece) has passed away, Aunt Adelaide demands that she receive custody of one of the children, that that child lives with her, and that their father (Colin Firth) remarries within a month. Though Aunt Adelaide is acting with concern for her family, her demands are often unfair and ridiculous, but the family must somehow find a way to fulfill them so that they can stay afloat.

4)    Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast

In the classic Disney film, Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury voices Mrs. Potts; one of the prince’s servants that is magically transformed into a teapot after a curse is placed on the prince and his castle. Mrs. Potts helps orchestrate a plan to get the curse lifted by creating a romantic evening for Belle and the Beast where she sings the iconic song, “Beauty and the Beast” while they share a romantic dance in the ballroom. Legend has it that Lansbury didn’t think she should perform the song and only agreed to sing one take of it – and that’s the version that appears in the film!

5)    Mrs. Price in Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Angela Lansbury stars as Mrs. Price in Bedknobs and Broomsticks as an apprentice witch who uses her powers to aid the war effort. When she takes three children into her home, she enchants a bedknob that, when reattached to the bed, will travel anywhere the children want it to. After going on a magical adventure with the children, Mrs. Price returns home and creates a magical army out of old uniforms and weapons, sending medieval knights, Elizabethan Guards, Cavaliers, Redcoats and Highlanders after the German army, eventually sending them into retreat.

Betty 10: Red Hot Holiday Trends

Betty 10: Red Hot Holiday Trends

Trend: Double Desserts

Taking two desserts and mixing and mashing them together is one of our favorite trends. Things like pie shakes, cookie stuffed cookies, and pie-filled cupcakes deliver a whole new kind of delicious. It’s a 1+1=3 kind of thing.
Pie, meet cookie. Cookie, say hello to pie. When two all-time favorites come together, you get Pumpkin Pie Cookies, the star at your next holiday cookie exchange.

Trend: Boozy Baking

From booze cakes to cocktail pies, bakers everywhere are bringing the bar into the kitchen. A titch of tequila or a skosh of scotch whiskey adds a serious shot of fun and flavor for the over 21 crowd. We’re loving these boozy baked goods!
Taste for yourself what the buzz is all about! A bit of bourbon, a hit of coffee liqueur and some vanilla vodka-spiked frosting make these sophisticated chocolate cupcakes the ultimate “holiday helpers.”

Trend: Color. Flavor. Fun.

Traditional baked goods are being transformed with bright colors and playful flavors. With a little creativity and imagination, no one can resist this happy, fun food!
Take sugar cookies to a whole new level of delicious! Kids and adults will love these cake batter flavored cookies with colorful frosting, and lots of sprinkles! Stack ‘em up and watch ‘em go.

Trend: From Cave to Kitchen

Forget the man cave. Today guys are in the kitchen making (or at least appreciating) really good food. Big food. Really good, big food that’s stacked and stuffed with the flavors they can’t resist.
Here’s a new take on chicken ‘n’ waffles - made better with beer, bacon, and bourbon. It’s the ultimate manly man meal.

Trend: Skinny Cocktails

Here’s the skinny! Drinking high-calorie cocktails is so last year. The modern mixologist is shaking things up with light & flavorful cocktails.
Add some clever sparkle to your next party. Enjoy these natural, light martinis made with fresh juice, high-quality liquor, and a splash of club soda. Lower calorie cocktails never tasted, or looked, so sweet. Cheers!

Trend: Better Than Bought

From canning to candy making, there’s a renewed interest in handcrafted foods. This season, homemade food gifts are just the right thing to show your care and creativity.
Create the perfect combination of flavor and crunch with this homemade candy. Rich chocolate fudge layered with cajeta caramel, cashews and a sprinkle of sea salt—a recipe to impress.

Trend: Veggie Love

Once just tolerated, vegetables are now celebrated. Omnivores and herbivores alike have discovered that veggies offer variety and great taste, and are feeling the love.
Hummus with fresh sweet potato packs even more plant power. Add a delicious blend of smoked paprika, coriander, and cumin to make this flavorful dip.

Trend: Shareworthy & Allergen-Friendly

Allergen-friendly foods may be free from things like nuts, dairy and eggs, but shouldn’t be free from flavor. Thankfully, we’re seeing new foods and recipes that can be enjoyed by everyone – whether you’re allergy-sensitive or not.
Gather everyone around the table to enjoy this moist and delicious pumpkin bread. Made with no nuts, no dairy, no eggs, and no gluten - no kidding!

Trend: D-I-Y for D-O-G

Man’s best friend deserves man’s best effort. That’s why making your own dog food is one of the latest canine crazes! This year, homemade dog treats are at the top of fido’s list.
Recipe: Dog Bark
This treat will make your dog sit up and beg for more. Make the bark by melting carob chips and peanut butter then top with your dog’s favorite ingredients – bacon and cheese. Bow WOW!

Trend: Food Craft

The kitchen is the new craft room. With food as their medium, clever cooks are making amazing edible food crafts that are as good to look at as they are to eat.
Naughty or nice, everyone will love these easy cho-coal-late treats. Cocoa Puffs® cereal dipped in melted chocolate and marshmallows create these tasty stocking stuffers.http://bit.ly/bcppcookies

Gone Nutty

Gone Nutty is a 2002 Ice Age short, featuring the lovable character Scrat (voiced by Chris Wedge). In this short film, Scrat tries (unsuccessfully) to hoard yet another acorn, but unintentionally ends up turning his entire acorn stock into an avalanche, which sends him tumbling to the snow below and destroys some of his prized acorns. The force of his acorn avalanche also causes continental drift, which shapes the Earth’s continents. This adorable short film was nominated for the 2004 Academy Award for Animated Short Film.

No Time for Nuts

The 2006 Ice Age short film, No Time for Nuts, also stars the beloved Scrat. In this short, Scrat stumbles upon a time machine, which transports one of his acorns. Scrat becomes angered and tries to punch the time machine, only to accidentally send himself to the Middle Ages! After an attack from some archers, Scrat is able to transport himself and his acorn to many places throughout history, including Ancient Rome, the RMS Titanic, the first Ice Age film, the French Revolution, Benjamin Franklin’s famous kite experiment, Michelangelo’s David, a wormhole, and the future. This short film was nominated for the 2007 Academy Award for Animated Short Film.

Surviving Sid

Surviving Sid is a 2008 Ice Age short that stars Sid the Sloth (voiced by John Leguizamo). Sid takes a group of school children on a camping trip and – in typical Sid fashion – it ends badly. When trying to pick a flower, Sid accidentally starts a chain reaction wherein a tree falls and hits a rock, which hits larger rocks, until a large iceberg is hit. This leads to the creation of the Grand Canyon, and to traumatizing the young campers, who end up tying Sid up.

Scrat's Continental Crack-up

The two-part short film Scrat’s Continental Crack-up was released in 2010 and 2011 (parts one and two, respectively). In this short film, Scrat is again looking for a place to safely store his acorn, this time atop an ice cap. He somehow manages to crack the ice cap and break the mountain below, and falls into the rift, traveling past all of Earth’s layers to the inner core! Scrat makes the core spin, which breaks Pangea into continents and creates new life. Scrat also alters our world by accidentally creating a Scrat Sphinx, and Scrat faces on Mount Rushmore. In the end, Scrat is discharged from the core and lands on a piece of ice, which breaks and separates him from his precious acorn.

Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas

Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas is this year’s must-see holiday special! Spend the holidays with your favorite prehistoric friends as they try to save Christmas for the whole world! After accidentally destroying Santa’s workshop, the animals must work together to save Christmas for everyone. Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and Seann William Scott all lend their voices to this hilarious tale of a group of friends out to save the holiday season.
